License Conversions: ICAO to JAA

The method taken to obtain a JAA license will depend on your current license(s) held, the license you are trying to obtain, and in some cases, the hours or types of aircraft you have experience on.

Conversion from your ICAO license to a JAA ATPL has been set forth in the regulations of JAR‐FCL 1.

Converting an ICAO Private Pilots License to a JAA Private Pilot

If you have fewer than 100 hours of flight time and wish to convert your ICAO Private Pilots License to JAA, you must complete the following:

‐ Obtain a JAA class two medical exam (this can be completed in the USA)
‐ Pass all seven JAA PPL theoretical examinations
‐ Pass the radio telephony operators practical test
‐ Complete flight training as required with a flying instructor to prepare for the flight test
‐ Pass the PPL skills test with a JAA flight examiner

If you have more than 100 hours of flying time and wish to convert your ICAO Private Pilots License to JAA, you are given a few exemptions, but still required to complete the following:

‐ Obtain a JAA class two medical exam (this can be completed in the USA)
‐ Pass three of the JAA PPL theoretical examinations (Human Performance & Limitations, Air Law and Radio Telephony)
‐ Pass the radio telephony operators practical test
‐ Complete flight training as required with a flying instructor to prepare for the flight test
‐ Pass the PPL skills test with a JAA flight examiner

All testing for is completed at our training facilities.

Converting an ICAO license to JAA ATPL

All license conversions to JAA ATPL require you to obtain a JAA Class 1 medical for the JAA license. This initial medical must be done in Europe. If you hold an expired UK JAA Class 1 medical, you can renew it in Florida.

I am the holder of an ICAO PPL/CPL and want to convert to a JAA ATPL:

To convert your license as an ICAO PPL holder, you will be required to complete an approved ATPL ground school program with a JAA training provider. The ground school can be either a full‐time residential program or a distance learning program.

Our ground school is divided into three modules, covering all 14 ATPL subjects. The residential class will take six months to complete and our distance learning program is designed to be completed within 12 months.

For the ICAO PPL holder:
On completion of passing all 14 ATPL theoretical exams, you will need to complete a JAA course for the commercial pilots license. This is a 25 hour program for the single engine license or 28 hours for the multi engine license, followed by a skills test with a JAA examiner. This training and testing is completed at our training facilities.

Before commencing the JAA CPL training, you must have at least 150 hours total time and you will be required to have 5 hours of night (3 hours dual, 1 hour cross‐country and 5 takeoffs and landings).

For license issue, you will require 200 hours total time, 100 hours PIC, 300NM cross‐country and a radio telephony license already achieved.

For the ICAO CPL holder:
On completion of passing all 14 ATPL theoretical exams, you will need to complete a JAA conversion course for the commercial pilots license. Before beginning the training, you must have at least 100 hours JAA PIC. This training is “as required,” and once you have demonstrated satisfactory standards to the chief pilot, then you will be able to complete the skills test with a JAA examiner. This training and testing is completed at our training facilities.

On completion of the CPL, you will need to pass a JAA instrument rating. The training for this must be completed in European airspace. It is a 50 hour training program, however if you hold an ICAO instrument rating, you are iven a 40 hour exemption from the course, leaving you with a 15 hour conversion to complete in Europe.

I am an experience professional ICAO ATPL and want to convert to an unrestricted JAA ATPL:

If you hold:

‐ JAA Class 1 medical
‐ R/T license
‐ More than 1,500 hours on multi‐pilot aircraft
‐ Are type rated already, and
‐ Have more than 500 hours on type

You are still required to pass all of the 14 JAA ATPL theoretical exams under the direction of an approved training provider; however you are not required to attend a formal ground school.

On completion of passing the examinations, you may complete the training as required in the simulator of which you have more than 500 hours on type, and on which an ATPL skills test will be conducted by UK CAA flight ops inspector. Typical training providers for the JAA approved course here in the US are Flight Safety and PanAm.

I am an experience professional ICAO ATPL and want to convert to a restricted UK registered JAA ATPL:

The UK will issue a license that is restricted to G Registered aircraft, if you hold the following:
‐ More than 3,000 hours total time on aircraft of more than 30,000 kgs MTOW on scheduled international or similar routes
‐ More than 1,500 hours PIC on aircraft of more than on aircraft of more than 30,000 kgs MTOW

The course requirements require you to sit two written exams, Human Performance and Limitations and Air Law.

The restriction is to fly UK registered aircraft only. This may be removed if you go on to complete the remaining 12 examinations, which are classed as a new set and attempt subjects to normal ATPL theory pass standards.

Due to the restrictions, many airlines will not actually accept this license and very few people attempt it.
